Introduction
Activity
- The Industrial Revolution describes the transition from a society based on hand manufacturing and human or animal power, to a society based on machinery.
- It was characterized by the use of steam powered engines, the spread of factories and machines, mass produced goods and mechanised transport.
- The Industrial Revolution began in Britain around 1760, but really took off around the 1840s.
Activity
- Using resource sheet 1. Industrial Inventions, try to arrange the inventions in order from earliest to latest. Try to guess the date of the invention.
2. Image analysis.
- View the first image of Kersal Moor pre-industrial revolution.
- View the second image of Kersal Moor during the industrial revolution.
- What differences do you notice?
- List as many things that you can think of which did not exist before the industrial revolution.
3. Brainstorm/Discussion:
- Write down five things that you enjoy doing on a regular basis.
- Compare your list with the rest of the class and tick off any of the things that could have been done before the IR.
- On your piece of paper, answer: How has the IR impacted what you do in your daily lives?
