Lesson 9 - The Declaration of the Rights of Man
Introduction
After the Bastille was captured, France underwent a period of time known as the "Great Fear". During the summer of 1789, peasants began turning against the wealthy landowners of the countryside, threatening them physically and destroying their property. Riots popped up in cities. Members of the Third Estate set up a new city government that came to be known as the Paris Commune. Additionally, the National Assembly adopted the Declaration of the Rights of Man and Citizen on August 26th, 1789. Many Enlightenment ideas were incorporated in the document, including ideas on natural rights and the true purpose of government. |
