- Read pages 239 - 244 in Crossroads.
- Complete a chart that shows the pros and cons of either a) staying in France and living on a feudal style farm, or b) moving to New France and starting a new life as a Habitant. Re-read pg. 241 and take a look at page 59 as a reference. Here is an example of a table you can use.
- Choose an assignment from one of the three options below:
Assignment Options
- Option 1 - Coureur de Bois
- Background reading: pg. 234-235.
- You are an entrepreneur looking to get into the fur trade. You require employees to locate and bring you raw materials (furs) so that you can sell them to fashion designers back in France. Write a job description for a classified ad for the position of coureur de bois. Be sure to include: a job description, duties, responsibilities/objectives, and required skills. Here is a link to a modern site to give you an idea of what a classified add looks like.
- Answer on a seperate piece of paper:
- Who were Radison and Grosseilliers?
- What was their connection to England?
- Background reading: pg. 234-235.
- Option 2 - Les Habitants
- Background reading: pg. 240-241, 243-244
- Create a web to illustrate what life was like for the habitants. Where possible, try to address Society, Politics, Economics, Religion, Military & Geography.
- Create an Infographic detailing what life was like for women in New France. Here is a link to a website where you can make infographics for free. And here is an example of what an infographic looks like.

- Option 3 - The Seigneurial System
- Background reading, pg. 240-241.
- Make a sketch of a fictional early French Canadian town. Include the following:
- a name for your town
- a seigneury (must be on a river)
- manor house
- mill
- church
- habitant homes
- other appropriate buildings/roads etc.
- In a textbox inset on your sketch, describe the role and obligations of a seigneur.
